Color Management Systems
A color management system identifies the color spaces that are crucial to your work, those belonging to your scanner, monitor and printer. Descriptions of these devices are named profiles, or characterizations. A group of hardware and software companies called ICC (International Color Consortium) created a specification that is OC-independent and provides a data format for device profiles.
Software technologies used for implementing and handling ICC profiles are Apple ColorSync for Mac OS and Microsoft ICM for Windows. Device profiles are created using both hardware measurement instruments and software products from Monaco Systems. Profiles are then applied by ICC-compatible applications such as PhotoShop, Illustrator, PageMaker, InDesign, QuarkXPress, Freehand, CorelDraw! and others to insure matching colors through the design and printing process.
Prior to characterizing a device, or creating its ICC profile, it needs to be calibrated to ensure that it performs as close to factory settings as possible. This step is necessary due to the fact that devices drift over time. Many high-end devices include automatic calibration functions.
Device characterization, or profiling, is the second step in the color management process, following device calibration. Profiling is accomplished by feeding known color values to a device, measuring device-independent representation of them, and creating a profile that reflects the difference between "ideal" and measured color values.
